Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon Support!
The wait is over—PokédexTracker now has support for Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon! We held a poll on Twitter to see how to best enable the slight differences in the USUM dex, and though it was close, it seemed like branching out from the concept of generations and adding support for specific games was the right choice. Not only does this align with the feedback from our users, but it also is the best decision for the app long-term. Unfortunately, this change was quite complex. We're really sorry for the delay, but we wanted to make sure that we built this out in a way that would not only make it easier to add future games, but would also accommodate adding support for previous generations (that we don't currently support as well.
P.S. Follow us for updates on the site and to voice your opinion when we make polls like this again!
Game vs. Generation
The main reason USUM was so difficult to support was because it was technically still generation 7, but it had a different dex. So, in order to keep everyone's existing Sun & Moon dexes intact, we split things out by game instead of by generation. Now, whenever you create a new dex or edit an existing one, you'll have the ability to specify exactly which game you're collecting all of the Pokémon into. Now that we have this extra information, not only can we display the correct regional/national dex, but we can also use it to create a better tracking experience in the future such as bringing your game's location information to the top of the list or being able to filter out Pokémon that can't be directly caught in your game.
How to Start a USUM Dex
If you're already a PokédexTracker user, it's super easy to start tracking a USUM dex. You can either:
Edit one of your existing dexes and "upgrade" it into an USUM dex. This will transfer any capture history from a previous dex and transfer it over when appropriate. You can edit your dexes from your profile page.
Create a new dex. This will create a new dex from scratch. Go with this method if you'd like to keep your new USUM dex separate from your old dexes. You can create new dexes from your profile page.
If you're a new user, go ahead and register, where you can pick which dex to get started with!
Goodbye, Region Filter
Another fairly large change that came with this release was the removal of the region filter. We've been trying to determine the future of this filter for a while, and we didn't think that it made much sense moving forward.
The main functionality that the region filter provided was the ability to complete a Living Dex incrementally. First, you'll capture all Pokémon from Kanto, and once you’ve caught 100% of those Pokémon, you'll move onto Johto, etc—it makes achieving a Living Dex more doable. We believe that there are better ways to accomplish this same goal, such as a tailored todo list view of all remaining Pokémon, or a better way to search/filter all of the Pokémon in general. We hope to bring these features to you in the near future!
We Appreciate Your Support
We wanted to thank you all so much for your continued support of our site. However, this is simply a fun side project for us that we're currently paying for out of pocket. One thing that we decided early on was that we didn't want to introduce ads on our site because it would hurt the user experience too significantly. So, we started thinking about other ways to make maintaining, building, and improving the site more sustainable.
That's why we've added a page where you can donate to our cause! Other than our development time, the largest cost is for our servers, which ensure that the site is always available and secure. For all those who donate, a special flair will be added to your profile, and we'll add you onto our list of supporters on GitHub. We really appreciate every dollar donated to keep the site running smoothly!
As always, feel free to check out our issues list on GitHub, or tweet us/email us about what features or improvements we should work on next. Happy tracking!
